The December holidays mark the end of a long year. They are a time to take a brea,k to reflect and recharge. While many of us will be staying home this year whether it is alone or with family, some will want to spend their days outdoors, surrounded by nature. For those who are looking to get away for a quick day-trip or long weekend, we’ve rounded up the top ski resorts across the country for you to consider for your holiday adventure.
Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado
Beaver Creek is great for first timers, for casual cruisers, for mogul fanatics, and for powder hunters. But the heart and soul of what makes Beaver Creek really special is its perfectly designed village, the resort’s beating heart. Here heated sidewalks ensure that no visitor must walk around town in snow.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
This resort is frequently rated the best in North America by the major ski magazines, and it combines world-class terrain with convenient slopeside breathtaking natural scenery, and the wonderful Western town of Jackson. In addition to this the resort offers an array of tours by sno-coach, snowshoe, snowmobile, cross country or backcountry skiing, plus ice climbing, sleigh rides in the National Elk Refuge, museums, cat-skiing, heli-skiing and much more.
Telluride has many charms, but the one thing that sets it apart from the competition is the incredible variety of terrain, in and out of bounds. There’s plenty for beginners, plenty for experts, lots of chutes and hike-to terrain, accessed more easily with permanent stairs and rails, and on top of it all, some of the best mogul skiing in the world.
Vail has long been the most popular ski resort in North America, for good reason, and was also one of the first in the country to embrace snowboarders, retaining this feel of inclusivity three decades later. For many years it held the title of “largest single mountain ski resort,” with nearly 200 trails across 5,289 “developed” acres served by more than 30 well connected and efficient lifts.
Deer Valley, Utah
Deer Valley is one of three world-class ski areas located in Park City, Utah, a short drive from Salt Lake City, the location of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Apart from being highly regarded for its skiing, Deer Valley has carefully built a reputation for brilliant service standards and it aims to provide the 'crème de la crème' of on and off-slope service and facilities.
Breckenridge is an extremely popular ski destination with a very active historic town and laid-back vibe. It's undoubtedly an awesome mountain to ride, but it can also get frustratingly crowded. This isn't surprising given all the things Breck has going for it; affordable lodging, an abundance of slopes and North America's highest lift. The town atmosphere is fun and relaxed, plus there is a ton of shopping, dining, and drinking options to choose from.
